Getting your Snapchat Memories back, step by step
A few minutes to make the request in the Snapchat app, then a few hours to a few days of waiting before you receive your files.
1. Request your memories in the Snapchat app
- Open your profile by tapping your Bitmoji, at the top left of the screen.
- Open the settings with the gear icon, at the top right.
- Scroll down to "My Data" and tap it.
- Turn on the option to export your Memories, then confirm the export.
- Choose the period: Yesterday, Last week, Last month, Last year, 2 years or All time. To get all your memories back, choose "All time".
- Enter the email address where you want to receive your data, then send the request.
The labels may vary slightly depending on your version of the Snapchat app. What matters: "My Data", the export of your Memories and the "All time" period.
2. Receive and download the ZIP files
- Wait: your data is being prepared, which takes from a few hours to several days depending on how many memories you have.
- Open the email from Snapchat and tap the link: it takes you to a download page (log in to your account if asked).
- Download all the parts one by one in ZIP format ("mydata~….zip", "mydata~…-2.zip", etc.). There may be just a few or several dozen.
- Download all the parts: the first one contains the file with the dates and places.
- Put them in one folder on your computer, without unzipping them.
- Make sure you have enough space: about the size of the ZIP files for the result, plus 50 to 600 MB for the detailed street map, depending on the number of places. Memories Map checks the space before starting.
- The download links expire after a few days: don't wait too long.
3. Run Memories Map
- Download Memories Map, unzip it and run Memories Map.exe.
- Choose the folder that contains the ZIP files, then an empty folder for the result (on a drive with enough space).
- Leave the options ticked if you want everything (text burned in, videos joined, places, map), then click Find my memories.
- When it's done, double-click Memories map.html to explore your memories.
Processing can take from a few minutes to several hours depending on the number of videos. You can stop it and resume it later: the work already done is kept.
What you get
- One folder per year, then per month ("2023 / 07 - July").
- Files named with the date, the local time and the place: "2023-07-14 22.15 - Montmartre, Paris.jpg".
- The date and GPS position written into each file, recognized by Photos (iPhone) and Google Photos.
- "Memories map.html": an interactive map that works even offline.
